The
world of hospitality is all about variety- variety of jobs, businesses,
locations, customers, challenges, and experiences. The list could
be much longer, but you have probably got the message! Food, drink
and accommodation are what the industry is all about. The style
ranges from fast food restaurants to exclusive hotels. There are
millions of hospitality locations all over the world, from small
tea rooms to vast kitchens preparing thousands of meals a day
for airline travellers.
Opportunities
in international hospitality industry are unlimited. Therefore,
hospitality graduates with excellent academic background and international
practical experience have much better chances in obtaining placements
abroad than graduates of other disciplines. There is a general
impression that opportunities in the hospitality industry are
limited to being a waiter or even a chef. That is not true. These
kinds of jobs are important as they usually the only points of
contact a customer has within the business. But there are hundreds
of jobs that you could do within the hospitality business, which
might never involve cooking or serving a meal.
You could be a ride operator,
tour guide, steward, maintenance officer, maitre'd human resources
manager, ground officer, wine waiter, fitness instructor, event
manager, guest relations manager, marketing manager, house keeper
or front office manager. The list is endless. The hospitality
industry needs young people with ability, energy and fresh ideas.
There are many ways to join the industry, and a whole range of
qualification routes and training opportunities to launch you
into a rewarding career.

Colleges
and universities in India and abroad offer various programmes
designed to prepare young people for a management career in hospitality.
Depending on the interests and on how long one wants to study,
young people can choose a Bachelor's Degree or a Master's degree
or a postgraduate diploma programme. All programmes are well respected
by employers. All programmes provide a solid foundation to build
on through appropriate supervisory and first line management experience.
Hospitality employers are keen to recruit bright people, and opportunities
for early success within the industry are good. Since internship
is an integral part of all hospitality programmes, it gives young
students a range of experiences so that they become familiar with
every aspect of hotel operation.
Before
you decide taking a programme in hospitality, you need to think
about whether you are definitely ready to commit to a carer in
the industry. Jobs in hotels and restaurants are notoriously highly
pressurised and involve unsociable hours. But if you think it
is for you, go for it, as hotels and restaurants can also be fun,
exciting and challenging places to work.
